RFID for newborns

Here’s an interesting article which describes the growing number of hospitals that are using RFID technology to monitor newborns.

JFK Memorial is one of more than 80 health care facilities statewide that use such technology to prevent child abductions. The eastern Riverside County hospital, which averages 300 births per month, recently locked down after a mother who gave birth at the hospital tried to leave before she was properly discharged.

What about privacy implications, right?

Simply put, there's not a lot of information on a newborn, the privacy implications aren't that big. The bracelet transmits the name and those of the new parents to a computer screen, which keeps track of his whereabouts. The computer also alerts staff should the infant be removed from the maternity area. It also would have tracked his location inside the hospital to help find him
