1902.1

The IEEE has started work on a new protocol—a standard called IEEE 1902.1 also known as RuBee—that is expected to give retailers and manufacturers an attractive alternative to RFID for many applications, especially item-level efforts.

They're saying it is 12 to 18 months from becoming a real product alternative to today's RFID. It's chief appeal is it's reliability in harsh environments and on liquid containers etc. Is it real? Has it got a chance? Complete story here.
