A Tag with RFID Capabilities at a Bar-code Price?
John Johnson, Senior Editor at DC Velocity, which can be seen via this link, has a piece just out about the ongoing development of RFID chips made entirelyof plastic. He says it's likely still a few years off, but it could 'turn the market upside down.'
Among other things, he notes the breakthrough means manufacturers would suddenly have an affordable way to tag even the most inexpensive items: packages of toilet paper, gallon jugs of spring water or packs of gum.
Not everyone thinks it is a realistic goal:
"We've looked into [plastic electronics] ... and concluded that it has no mainstream applicability," says Rob Glidden, senior director of engineering at Impinj Inc., which produces silicon-based RFID tags. "While the premise is technologically fascinating, our customers need ... Gen 2 tags in volume, now."
To coin a phrase, what say you?
