Monsieur, how about a bottle of fake wine – only $250 –it’s very good!

Have you ever been to a nice restaurant and the waiter makes this announcement? Well, if he doesn’t say it’s “fake” then how would you know? Or are you a real wine aficionado?

It should come at no surprise that fake wines are on the rise. Slap on a false label with a great name that’s just been printed, brand a clean cork, duplicate the foil wrap, and voila – you have an expensive bottle of wine! But now here comes RFID technology.

Try looking at a company called Smartcorq. They can now store technical information about the wine in the bottle, such as harvest dates, maturity dates, even food pairing suggestions. And now they can program the cork with a tamper-proof bottle ID code.

A fixed or portable reader downloads the data to a computer, PDA, or mobile telephone. Pulling out the Smartcorq destroys the memory chip. They call tell instantly if the wine is not from the proper winery.

So now when the waiter asks you the above question, you can now say “I’ll have an expensive bottle with an RFID cork!”
