Symbol CEO Says Don't Strike Up The Band for RFID Yet

Despite big initiatives by the likes of Wal-Mart, Target and the Department of Defense, and a good bit of hype, tracking goods with RFID tags isn't going to become commonplace anytime soon, said Sal Iannuzzi, president and CEO of Symbol Technologies.
That's the lead sentence lifted directly out of this eWeek story yesterday. Is he right? Maybe. But here's what I think the story overlooks although this point may be quite clear to Mr. Iannuzzi: from all that I have been reading lately, the biggest surprise this year and next is going to be all the ways people find for using RFID technology that no one has ever dreamed of until now. In five years time, we're going to wonder how we lived so long without this technology while we marvel as well that there ever was a time in 2006 when we wondered when and if it would ever come to fruition.
