RFID and 'The Internet of Things?'

You don't get to become an institution like MIT by being off-the-charts nutty about the future of technology. Therefore, while a comment made by John Williams, director of the MIT Auto-ID Labs, struck me as a little out there, I don't often bet against MIT's vision. What did he say?

"There is simply an enormous amount of applied research that needs to be done to move RFID forward and realize the dream of creating the Internet of Things..."

You can read all about this here. It's worth reading since it's about what happened last week at MIT during an invitation-only gathering of RFID experts. In brief:

The aim of the RFID Academic Convocation, which was attended by 100 leaders in RFID, was to identify opportunities for research collaboration with RFID researchers from around the world, define core technology research areas needed to meet industry RFID requirements and begin a to draw a technology road map for those market opportunities and technologies.
