Private Enterprise vs. State Legislators

Here's a post from RFID Lowdown that doesn't take sides but merely asks questions, the central one being whether the RFID industry should get out in front of all this privacy stuff or sit back while legislators on a state by state basis do what they often do: use technology debates for political gain. Actually, that last part is my opinion. Legislators can serve a public need -- and they often do. But having been in technology for, er... well, a long, long time... I seem to remember more often than not that the political experts who talk and talk and talk often don't know what they're talking about. In New Hampshire there's a law pending which would force retailers to alert consumers that products have been tagged. Is that so shoppers can go running from the store?
You know what? It's Friday. It's been a long week. We could debate this. But here's what's going to happen: there's no stopping RFID. No technology that has similarly so advanced people's convenience and knowledge has ever been slowed for long in the history of man. Certainly, there may be some banned applications of RFID and there will be the reasonable privacy safeguards, but RFID is here, it is staying, and it is going to change the world of commerce for the better for a long time to come. Now, can I get an Amen?
